First Impressions of Monterrey — Mexico’s Most Modern City?

First Impressions of Monterrey — Mexico’s Most Modern City?

[Music] Monterey Monterey what is up Monterey you know they told me about the mountains they told me there’d be mountains they told me about carne asada I know you guys love eating meat up here but they didn’t warn me that it would be this windy I just got out of the car and got blown away by this gust of wind maybe you guys can tell me is it windy all the time or did I just get a crazy day anyway if you guys can even hear me over that wind I’m here at a place called faccio Santa Lucia which is a beautiful walking path next to a beautifully colored I was gonna say River but it’s not really a river I guess it’s like a stream or a canal whatever it is it’s pretty cool I mean take a look at this thing but you know what guys this is a pretty exciting day for me because this is my first day in Monterey in fact it’s my first day in all of northern Mexico I’m now in the state of Nuevo Leon which is a new state for me and I can definitely see some differences between the north of Mexico and the south in the center as I’ve said before the different parts of Mexico are just so different from each other maybe I’ll talk about some differences a bit later but for now I’m just gonna enjoy this walk and see where it takes me okay but there is one thing I have to mention one difference that is too funny not to talk about on the drive from the airport to where I’m saying I saw something called Tim Hortons and Tim Hortons is a Canadian coffee shop I had no idea was in Mexico I’ve never seen it here before but on this short drive that I took we passed not one not two but three thin Morden’s as I walked through this fountain oh my god my camera’s covered in water the fountains in the fountains in Monterrey just have no chill apparently but yeah as I was saying I saw three Tim Hortons I tried to get a cell phone picture of them but they went by so quickly that but yeah unexpectedly seeing a Canadian coffee shop in Monterrey definitely made this Canadian smile also making me smiles of weather today now that that crazy wind is slowed down the Sun is out and it’s just a beautiful day so as I walk out of the patio and up to the ground level I’m surrounded by some pretty awesome looking buildings this monster behind me is the museum what is it museo de historia Makana it’s a big museum because there’s a lot of Mexican history to learn about that is for sure [Music] so this is probably a good time to point out one obvious difference between Monterey and some of the other cities I’ve visited which is that Monterey is a very modern place I haven’t seen as many of those like colonial town squares and stuff that you see in cities like Puebla or querétaro or even you know Guadalajara but what you do have in Monterrey is you have a lot of industry a lot of new big buildings I know some people might not want to hear this but it’s a more Americanized City it’s more like the United States that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a distinct Mexican flavor it does but generally speaking the further south you go in Mexico the more traditional and indigenous it gets and the further north you get the more industrial and the more modernized I think that’s fair to say right there’s a nice little food festival or something behind me [Music] oh what a bother we can evil [Music] [Music] here we go [Music] I just talked to a couple people at that little farmers market todo en espanol yo hablo solo una espanol por el Camas a Shawn I was very proud of myself to only speak Spanish and yeah they were explaining a little bit about where I am and what I should see this here is the governor’s palace in front of me I don’t know if it’s like closed there’s like a bunch of security people behind me so I won’t get too close with my camera just cuz sometimes when you see a lot of police you don’t know should I be here I don’t know but very nice looking building Wow look at that stretch stretch limousine in front of us obviously there’s some people with quite a bit of money in Monterrey what’s going on over here there’s a little a little wrestling ring okay the next wrestling match is going to be Dan from the new travel against Greg from the kinetic cannons I hope you see this Greg start training [Music] what a beautiful city you know I feel like some of these buildings that I’m quickly passing by like this one D at Rio de la ciudad I could probably make a whole video about but there’s just so much to see down here as you know this is just a first impressions video so if it looks like I don’t know too much about the places I’m walking by it’s because I don’t this is my first time down here so just here to share that experience with you guys but I did learn one interesting thing about Monterrey and about northern Mexico in general is that a lot of the culture that people typically think of being Mexican comes from places like Monterrey it comes from the north of Mexico for example the cowboy hats foods like burritos which you don’t get in the south of Mexico but are very popular and very delicious muy Rico in Nuevo Leon you know they’re all from this region and because it’s so close to the US border that’s what a lot of people think of as being Mexican but as I’ve tried to show through my video series there’s many different sides to this country anyway guys I’m gonna end the video here there’s so much more I could show you down in Monterrey but I have something exciting coming up tonight so I need to save some energy I’m going to go see los Tigres so that is gonna be another exciting video for you guys but yeah for now I just want to leave you guys with one final thought this is something that I found pretty interesting as most of you know I just came from Guadalajara and when I was in Guadalajara I told the guy I told a friend of mine Oriol that I was going to Monterrey and he said oh that’s so exciting because he likes he likes Monterrey more than his city guadalajara and now that I’m in Monterrey I talked to someone from Monterrey who says they like Guadalajara more than their city Monterrey so you know when you look at Mexico you look at the old Mexico you look at the New Mexico sometimes it’s easy to feel like another city has everything in your city doesn’t have as much but I think it’s true what they say that the grass is always greener on the other side and for my experience traveling through this country it’s not worth debating what city is the best what city is the most beautiful because they all have a lot to offer and my first impression of Monterrey is that it’s a really beautiful place I encourage you to visit and yeah hope you guys enjoyed this video stay tuned for more coming very soon as always guys I’m Dan from the new travel I’ll see you next time [Music] [Laughter] [Music]

Podría ser más moderno, si existiera respeto hacia los animales, hay muchos animales abandonados en las calles y caballos de carreton. Las personas siguen siendo 80%, casi todas ignorates del bienestar animal. Al igual sistema de salud pública, y de transporte.

06:24 The reason why the Governor's palace was very protected was because of some issues surrounding the raise in prices of the public transport (which by the way, we pay the one of the most expensive and inefficient services of transport in the entire country). A group of citizens called Únete Pueblo, who fight for better conditions in this same regard, were against this decision since it was first announced in september 2018 and, as an act of protest, began developing a series of activities like public manifestations, a collection of signatures, and even staying inside the Governor´s palace.

To showcase their authority, they were taken by the police forces one Sunday morning, obviously as an act of retaliation by the government, and since then, the police sieged the Governor's palace (instead of doing their job and preventing crimes). Fortunately, the members were able to pay the bail that same day and continued with their demands.

I'm from Monterrey and had the chance to live this story until, for some reason, both the government and the transport agency decided not to proceed with the raise. However, we still have the same problems that were before all of this happened. I took some photographs and did some videos about this fight within my channel and other called Voces de la Ciudad, a documentary project about the state of Nuevo Leon.

What many Mexicans and especially Americans don't realize readily is the size of their individual countries. You can fit all of Great Britain 3 times into the state of Texas (Great Britain = England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales). And you can fit Texas into Mexico 3 times. An English friend told me he started driving in McAllen Texas at the crack of dawn, going straight north to the panhandle, and that night he was still driving in Texas. And a mathematician calculated that every person in America (the USA) could be packed into Texas with room left over. This will disappoint many Americans who feel overcrowded. Oh, and did I mention the size of Canada? Lol.
