Aljazeera – The Traveler – Albania – Episode 1 (activate subtitles)

The Traveler Let’s make the distant horizon our destination, reaching beyond..
so far will we travel. Together, we will wander and explore the magic of today’s light and the mystery of yesterday’ shadows. We touch the history of times to read the story of the coming future, to celebrate what is precious to our hearts and to cherish what makes us humans shine. To discover the wonders and miracles,
wherever they may be hiding. Observe every detail of their color and to feel them pulsing. May we be moved by visions. Let’s make all that we can imagine come true. Here I am, the traveler and today I step in a completely new world. Albania
Back to the roots Welcome to the last pearl
discovered in Europe. Together we will discover beautiful countries
that was unrevealed to the world for five decades. Welcome to Albania! When you step into this country, you would think
that you are in an ordinary country. But as soon as you start your trip, you will be surprised by its magic and by its hidden surprises. There is nothing better to start this journey with
than with the old markets. In this small town in the
middle of the country which is close to the capital Tirana, you’ll find Krujë Bazaar. The Ottomans started the market 500 years ago. It has remained a prosperous market
throughout all these centuries till date, for the traditional handmade crafts, marvellous handmade products Pottery, copper, wood and carpets. While you are wandering around this market
You will notice the cross-pollination between the Albanian culture
and the The Middle Eastern culture. The Ottomans who stayed in this country
for over 500 years left their cultural landmarks. And you’ll find their traces
on the traditional products but for sure in an Albanian style. As we are here now in Krujë, we will head to a lovely place
for every Albanian person. Today, we are visiting Skanderbeg Museum. The Albanian character
lots of legends tell about is the Albanian national hero. Skanderbeg resisted the Ottomans
in the 15th century and chased them away from Krujë that then became his capital. They made the enemy retreat from multiple locations
in massive battles Albanians are proud of the fact that the victory was on their side. The Ottomans had to wait for the death
of this remarkable military leader before they could take control over Albania
and reign for over 500 years. Then Albanians fell prey
to the biggest colonial power after Ottomans had fallen. And they ended up being
under the control of the communist regime that ruled them by iron and fire for over 50 years. Throughout these ages, Skanderbeg
remained the symbol of Albanian the national identity and represented a state of resistance
and longing to independence which didn’t happen that often in Albanian history. Indeed, he is the symbol of courage for Albanians
and their quest for freedom which they had been fighting hundreds of years for. The country didn’t realise that until early 90s. Krujë – Northern Alps – Theth We call it Albania but its people call it Shqipëria or the land of eagles. And the truth is that you need two wings
and eyes of an eagle to discover the greatness of Alps mountains
of Albania. One legend says that there was a knight
who went to war and he lost his way back. His wife cried and prayed to the sky
for him to come back. The sky answered her prayers and split the ground into high mountains and in the middle of it there is a narrow tunnel
that led the knight to his home. Later, it was called the Albanian Alps. When you stand in this deep silence, all what you know about modern life fades away. This view takes you to the time where the human was brought to this beautiful world
carrying nothing but senses and when you’re in this place,
you won’t need anything else. 70% of Albania is covered mountains
and dangerous heights that can’t be reached except with SUV or by foot. Now, we are in National Alps Reserve. Here, snow melts from the top of mountains forming waterfalls and water canals and sometimes beautiful oases. Let’s explore it together. We were told that we have to visit this tower
which is situated in heart of Alps. It was built for the protection of blood. When someone commits a murder,
he comes to this tower. Inside he has full immunity for 2 weeks
and he and his family are under protection. The village tries to solve the problem
with the family of the victim during these 2 weeks. This is an old Albanian law called “Kano”. My family was responsible for this tower
and it provided protection and food to whoever gets in it. That way, my family saved 300 persons
in 3 centuries. When this tune is played, the villagers nearby know that there is someone
who took the tower as a shelter and that he enjoys the protection of “Kano” law. Tourists come to the Alps from everywhere
to explore its valleys and highlands which may reach 2700 meters in some areas and to enjoy its pure nature
that has not been polluted yet by modern life. All that I suffered arriving
through this rugged land faded away when I got here. One of the numerous waterfalls
which is falling from high heights. This waterfall exceeds 30 meters which makes it one of the highest waterfalls
in Europe and one of the most beautiful ones. We’re still exploring the hideaways
of The Albanian Alps. We are on a lake which is considered one of the biggest
industrial lakes in the world. It’s purpose was connecting the remote mountain areas
that are inaccessible by cars. The most special here though
is this wonderful nature. This journey is considered as one of the most
beautiful journeys in the world by boat. It allows you to enjoy
the view of the high rock formations that reach into sky with their impressive heights, sometimes green and sometimes rocky. Unique cavities, caves and bends. A 2-hour trip in Koma Lake. Every single moment of it, you make sure you do not to miss a single view
because you might not see anything like it anywhere else. Once you reach Shala Groove an oasis appeared between the mountains. It without a doubt it takes you from reality
to the world of tales and legends. What a wonderful surprise! Suddenly in Koma Lake, you enter this beautiful place, a wonderful oasis filled
with beauty and ingenuity. Look at this cottage, trees and mountains. It’s wonderful, indeed. Koman – Valbonë To explore all the secrets of this place, I did what people did here
in mountain villages. I rode this horse for a nice trip
through forest. This is a journey many people dream of. A journey back to the roots
to the mother nature. Forests here form 1/3 of Albanian land. And there are more than
3000 types of plants. Some of them only grow
in this unique environment. The villages nested high up in mountains, overlooking the plains, would pleasantly
surprise you to see. and make you feel as if the time has stopped. Its people are still planting and growing animals like their grandfathers were doing
hundreds of years ago. And they drink the pure, clear, cool and fresh water
coming from mountains and springs. The relationship between villagers
and all the creatures seems to be strong and warm even with bees. They take care of them. And it gives them unmatched clear mountain honey. We’re in the middle of the nature in Albanian Alps Mountains. Here you can get the local honey, Albanian tea and local bread. This is a kings’ breakfast. Valbona – Kavajë Since we are in the northernmost of Albania, we couldn’t resist travelling for some distance
to a border city in Kosovo, Kojova. Where the villagers of Albania buy
what they need from the markets of this town close by. No wonder the city has an Albanian character 90% of people of Kosovo are from Albanian origin. The greatest colonial forces
divided it into 2 countries as it did with the Arab world. Hello! Peace be upon you How are you? Give me a hat. How much? So, this is the Albanian hat and it is formed of wool
with the symbol of the country carved on it. And it is one of the characters
of the traditional Albanian custom. Alps mountains don’t recognise
political boundaries. The Albanian part is mixed with
the Kosovian part. And it is the place we chose
to do this special and dangerous adventure. Since we’re in the country of nature and beauty, why don’t we do some climbing? This adventure will be dangerous to some extent but I’m remain assured because I’m with Uta Ibrahimi The first Albanian to climb Everest. Let’s go and see what can we do. Oh, God! It isn’t true that there is always light
at the end of the tunnel, sometimes, the tunnel has a dead end like this. The poet says: If you are a man of opinion
then be a man of persistence. As the corruption of the
opinion is hesitation. And here we are after the climbing
completing the adventure. Kosovo – Rozafa Rozafa is a castle
which embodies centuries of history and millions of years
that formed this charming nature which is unique to Albania. A castle in the north standing ready above high mountain watching possible invaders
across the 2 rivers Bojana and Drin or Shkodër Lake or across the Adriatic Sea. It was always the entrance
for those wanting to take over Albania. It was built in the Roman era and some parts were added afterwards. It was under siege throughout history
by the Serbs, Byzantines and Ottomans. But its function today is to remind visitors of ancient history and with geography in which mountains,
water and plains are mixed to create Albania. Kosovo – Shkodër Our trip to Albanian Alps ends
as we reached Lake Shkodër. This lake, closed in by
mountains all around, played a cultural and economic role
in Albanian history. It’s a portal to Italy and Northern Europe due to its connection with the Adriatic Sea. It was always the main spot
that Albanians come to visit. Usually sunset is a special moment but it’s even more beautiful and unique when witnessed over one
of the biggest lakes in the world and the largest in south Europe Skodër Lake here in Albania. Next on The Traveler

I love Albania it is sich a creat place to visit!

Albania it's such a small country with such a big history. Mother nature has embroidery Albanian with her own hands, just how the bride to be embroidery her dowry! The sky is perfect and the foundation is strong and this represents Albanian people string as the eagles. they even call their selfs sons of eagles!

Albania is known for the country where all religions co-exist and get along with each other! Albanians respect and love each other they go to each other houses for their religious holiday, Muslims go Christians for Easter. Christmas and Christians go to Muslims houses for Ramazan, Bairam.
This is an Albanian tradition where Albanians never let any religion get between them unless few extremist Muslims who refuse their girls to marry Christian man.

Albanians are mixed and they marry each other and love each other until the borders open they marry out of their nationality! if you marry an Albanian girl are considered lucky if marry an Albanian girl, they make it good wives and guys are providers!

Albanians are known for their BESA. Watch the story of how Albanians saved Jewish during WWII!

Albania is considered the jewel of Europe
