Advanced Sailing Lessons : Using a Traveler: Advanced Sailing Video Lessons

Having a traveler on your boat allows you
to squeeze just a little more mileage out of what you are doing. You can take the mainsheet
block and move it lower for heavy air, or higher to allow you to point closer into the
wind. Often instead of adjusting the sheet itself, the mainsheet, you can ease the traveler
down in a heavy puff; and then gradually, after the puff subsides, travel the sail back
up. It is a lot easier then trying to break the mainsheet loose, and it doesn’t matter
where you sitting. You can be further back and adjust both angles of the traveler, or
you can be sitting on the other side, move over, and then continue to travel, after the
boat settles down.
