Let’s get started. ¡Comencemos! Number 1. You should learn Spanish to communicate with the rest of the world because Spanish is the second most natively spoken language in the world! There are over 400 million native speakers in four different continents. Imagine the possibilities that means for you when it comes to travel. You can go a lot of places. Number 2. Earn the respect of the locals. When you’re visiting a foreign country, you shouldn’t expect locals to speak your language. Just taking the time to learn at least some basic phrases like: “¿Cómo estás?” or “Buenos días” goes a long ways in showing the respect for the locals when traveling. Now, you don’t have to be fluent in the language. But just take the time to learn some basic things about the culture and the language. Number 3. Break the estereotype of gringos who only speak one language. The first time I went to Playa del Carmen, we went out to a restaurant and I was immediately handed a menu in English. I was surprised! We are in Mexico, right? Why wouldn’t they hand me a menu in Spanish? They just assumed that I only spoke English. So, what did I do? I handed the menu back and said “Un menú en Español, por favor.” Break the stereotype. Learn another language. Be different. You can do it. Number 4. Spanish is easy to learn once you already know English. Do you have any idea how many words are exactly the same in both English and Spanish? There are a lot! Things like: internet, taxi, hotel… are exactly the same in English and Spanish. So you already have a head start before you even start. There was a study done by the US Foreign Service Institute saying that it takes less than 8 months for an English speaker to become proficient in Spanish, so you can do it. Number 5. Learn Spanish to become a more independent traveler. When you speak Spanish you can go to a Spanish speaking country, you don’t have to get a guide, you have no problem getting a taxi, riding the bus, ordering food, you can be much more independent and plan your own trips without having to take as many tours. This means more freedom for you and a richer, more enjoyable experience while you are traveling. Number 6. Make new friends. One of the most rewarding things about traveling is making new friends. And learning Spanish will help you create bonds with people you wouldn’t be able to if you didn’t speak the language. And finally, number 7. You should learn Spanish so that you can work abroad. Learning Spanish opens up tons of opportunities to work in other countries. Which can mean a more enriching work experience. You can collaborate and work with people all over the world, in many different countries. And you’ll be more sought after because you speak more than one languege. That’s just one more reason why you should learn Spanish.
